Freehold sits in the western, inland portion of Monmouth County, New Jersey, about 40 miles southwest of New York City and roughly 15 miles from the Jersey Shore. It is, in practice, two places sharing one name: Freehold Borough, a compact colonial-era town of about 12,500 residents that serves as the Monmouth County seat, and Freehold Township, a larger suburban municipality of roughly 35,000 that surrounds it on most sides. The distinction matters for home buyers because each municipality has its own government, services, and school system, even as residents of both identify with Freehold as a single community. The borough's history runs deep. It developed as a colonial settlement dating to the 1600s and 1700s and later became the seat of Monmouth County, a role it retains today with the county courthouse and administration centered downtown. The Battle of Monmouth, a significant Revolutionary War engagement fought in June 1778, took place on the fields that are now preserved as Monmouth Battlefield State Park just outside the town. The arrival of the railroad in the 19th century connected Freehold to New York and Philadelphia markets and helped establish its commercial importance. Freehold's cultural identity is closely tied to Bruce Springsteen, who grew up in the borough and has referenced its working-class streets throughout his music. The town was also home to Freehold Raceway, a Standardbred harness racing track established in 1853 that ranked among the oldest in the nation. Modern Freehold combines the borough's walkable Main Street downtown with the township's suburban subdivisions, regional shopping at the Freehold Raceway Mall, and convenient access to Routes 9, 33, and 79. With the Freehold Regional High School District serving the area's secondary students and bus and nearby rail connections toward New York, Freehold functions as both a local seat of government and a commuter-friendly community in central New Jersey.
