Forked River is an unincorporated community and census-designated place within Lacey Township, in the northern reaches of Ocean County, New Jersey. With a population of about 5,300, it is the best-known of Lacey Township's neighborhoods, and the name is so widely used that many Ocean County residents refer to the entire township as "Forked River." The community takes its name from the Forked River, a waterway that flows eastward into Barnegat Bay, and its identity is inseparable from the bay and the broader Jersey Shore landscape that surrounds it. The area's character is a mix of established residential neighborhoods, older shore-era homes, and the pine- and oak-covered terrain of the New Jersey Pinelands, which border the township to the west.
