Sparta is a township in Sussex County, New Jersey, set among the wooded hills and lakes of the state's Skylands region, roughly forty-five miles northwest of New York City. With a 2020 census population of about 19,600, it is a suburban-rural community whose identity is shaped by water — most notably Lake Mohawk, the large lake at its center — and by the surrounding highlands of northwestern New Jersey. Sparta combines a lake-oriented lifestyle with the rolling, forested landscape that defines Sussex County. The township's modern character flows from Lake Mohawk. In the 1920s, developers created a planned resort-and-residential community around the lake, promoting it as a weekend retreat for New Yorkers.
